Uruguayan photographer captures gaucho culture. Uruguay is the smallest country in South America, but it has a lot to offer including its gaucho culture, which refers to nomadic horsemen of the country.

Exhibition's images highlight a devotion to the land and a unique way of living, Lin Qi reports. Works of arts and crafts are hugely popular in bringing people living on different continents together. In 2018, an exhibition was held at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing to unfold the cultural richness of the Guarani people, one of the indigenous groups of South America.

The notion expressed above serves as a starting point in a conversation with Fabini about his photography practice. If we defined artist differently, then there might be a wide variety of categories for people that work with the same media.

Mediante pequeños cuadros de costumbres, el fotógrafo uruguayo Luis Fabini se propuso trazar un sistemático estudio fotográfico del hombre de a caballo en el continente americano. A lo largo de diez años, recorrió desde Tierra del Fuego hasta Alaska rastreando a hábiles jinetes: “Fui en busca del gaucho y, sin proponérmelo, salí a mi propio encuentro”, admitió cuando finalizó el proyecto. Uruguayan-Peruvian photographer Luis Fabini lives in New York and is the author of the books Gauchos and Cowboys of the Americas, for which he spent more than 10 years shooting different cowboys from South America to Alaska.

Cowboys – the Lone Ranger, Billy the Kid, the James Gang – these good and bad hombres of the frontier: They walk tall, ride hard and spend more time with guns than cows. That’s the Hollywood myth. A new book by Uruguayan photographer Luis Fabini gives a truer picture. Fabini has photographed real cowboys in eight countries on the two continents of the Americas.

For more than a decade, photographer Luis Fabini immersed himself in cowboy culture as he traveled through North and South America. This stunning collection of photographs from those travels reveals the cowboy who lives in silence and solitude, the interconnectedness of these men with the land, and a traditional way of life that exists on the outskirts of society but also vividly in our imaginations.

Gauchos, vaqueiros, chagras, charros, huasos. In countries around the Americas, in different languages and by any other name, they are all cowboys.

Photographer Luis Fabini documents a changing culture. Uruguayan-born, Brooklyn-based photographer Luis Fabini has immersed himself in cowboy culture for over a decade, travelling through North and South America to document a traditional way of life on the outskirts of society.

La muestra Vaqueros de América de Luis Fabini, en el CCE. Recibió su primera cámara a los siete años, en uno de los tantos viajes que como hijo de un diplomático uruguayo y una peruana le tocó hacer.
